In what ways
were the early twentieth century Progressives the heirs of the Populist Party with
respect to overall objectives, specific proposals for reform, and success?
Groups should post their thesis statement in the comments below. Be sure to include class period and names of group members, too!
Although both he Populist movement and the Progressive movement developed in part because of the widening gap between the rich and the poor, the movements had different origins and objectives due to urbanization that caused the focus to shift from agrarian unrest to social issues and other problems that accompanied industrialization and urban life. Because the Progressive movement had a broader set of goals that attracted a greater variety of people compared to the Populist movement, the Progressive movement saw greater success in regards to reforms and legislation passed.

After the eradication of the populist party, a new reform movement developed, progressivism. Progressivism could be considered the heir of Populism because of their common objectives, like wants of domination of silver, corruption reform, and lower taxes. However, the reform movements of the two groups show their root differences; the agriculturally motivated Populists' approach on reform was with group action made of masses of people, as seen in the Grange and Farmers' Alliance movements, while the industrialization supporting Progressives' approach on reform was to accomplish change through legislation, as seen in the Wisconsin Plan and Mann Act. The Progressives' approach on reform and their ideas, that attracted more and broader support from the people, made them more successful than the Populist party had formerly been.

DeleteIn the early 20th century, the populist party was created out of the ideas of the rural farmers, and evolved once it reached the hands of the working middle class. The Progressives reflect the thoughts of the populist party in their plans involving the following: worker protection laws, immigration reform, and nativism. Although the Progressives did derive these important motives from the Populist party, as heirs they did not inherit the poor success or low social reform of the Populist party, and as such had a higher and more impacting influence than the latter.

The populist party and progressive movements shared general ideas such as regulation of the banks, an active but regulated government, and "power to the people." Specific goals such as regulation of the railroads carried over, as did populist goals in the form of the referendum, initiative, recall, and 17th amendment. However, the populist party's agrarian goals did not continue into the progressive movement and this changed their success. The progressive movement had wider appeal and achieved a lot, while the Populist party only lasted four years.

In the early twentieth century, Populism, and then Progressivism, used their widespread reach as parties to advocate for reform in political, social, and economic circles. The Populists wanted to reform businesses, the civil service, immigration processes, and the labor industry, as well as increase the circulation of paper money in order to make paying off debts easier. Similarly, the Progressives based their plans for reformation in the beliefs that the government ought to fix social injustices, people should be more directly involved in government, and that the reach of government into society should not by corrupt or overbearing as in the case of political machines. The Progressives reflected the ways of the Populists that went before them most clearly in pushing the adoption of the 17th amendment that resulted in the direct election of Senators by the people. Progressivism was very much the heir to Populism despite their differences. The Progressive movement was much more successful than the Populist movement due to the lasting legacy Progressivism left in the way of specific laws and the newly developed responsibility of government to be involved in social and economic issues across the nation.

Although the Populist Party was certainly an issue party with similar radical demands, the Progressive Party had the greatest success in terms of overall impact on American society. The Populists tended to provide the greatest appeal towards farmers, while the Progressives focused on the citizenry in general, with vulnerable minorities in particular. The Populists had mixed success, while Progressive ideals became mixed in with the social movements of the 20th century and were later voiced by Democratic Party leadership. With key platforms such as equal pay, extended suffrage, and a larger government, they overshadowed the Progressives' call for more silver and fewer taxes.

While both the Populist and Progressive parties were born out of similar oppression and shared similar political ideas, their reformist ideals differed in focus; the Progressives looked to reform the social ways of America and the Populists looked to reform America's economic agenda.

Although the Progressives shared similar objectives with the former Populist party, the progressives enjoyed greater political and social success. The Progressives pushed for legislation such as anti-trust and other labor laws, as well as social ideas like prohibition of alcohol. The Progressives widespread appeal to the working class of America, and not just the rural farmers, largely lead to their success. The Populist party laid the groundwork for the progressive movement of the early 20th century through the inheritance of popular stances on issues.

DeleteAlthough the differences in region and focuses were prevalent, one can conclude the Populists laid the foundation for the Progressive party because, at their core, both parties wanted the government to do more for the common man. Neither party stood the test of time, but ideas that they had found success in the country later on and are still around today, such as: a graduated income tax, direct election of senators and protection of workers rights.

Ms. Harris,
ReplyDeleteDid you see me, Allison, and Grey's post? I swear I uploaded it on time but I'm not seeing it now...
-Alexis C
Alexis, I didn't. Can you post it again? Don't worry about the "on-time" factor.
DeleteI actually posted my group's thesis on here as well, but I'm not seeing it either. I was afraid that you may have removed it for fear of it being too epic. Would you mind if I post ours on here as well? It said waiting for moderator to approve last time. - Nick, Julian, and Dmitri's group.
DeletePost away! I'll double check they weren't marked as epic spam.
DeleteOk, found them!
ReplyDeleteWould you consider putting our class rank on Jupiter Grades?
ReplyDeleteI've thought about it. If you are concerned as to where your standing is, you may ask me privately. I don't feel comfortable putting them on Jupiter. Not everyone wants to know. And, more importantly, I'd rather you be more concerned with what you've learned so far.
DeleteAs a rule, 2nd quarter is a tough one for grades--the excitement of the beginning of the year wears off, the midterm, the gilded age. For some of you this 9 weeks grade represents a lot of hard work and effort, for some of you it will be a reminder that you need to turn it up a notch.
I looked at the calendar for Unit 6 and it has listed that we have reading due the day of our DBQ but we were not told this in class. We were told that we just needed to study for the DBQ.
